About the Wonderlic Personnel Test

The Wonderlic Personnel Test (WPT) is one of the most widely used cognitive ability assessments in employment screening worldwide. Developed by Eldon F. Wonderlic in 1936, the official test presents 50 questions in exactly 12 minutes — a deliberately punishing time constraint that makes speed as important as accuracy. The average score across all test-takers is approximately 20 out of 50. The test is used across industries including finance, healthcare, technology, logistics and notably in NFL player assessment — where Wonderlic scores are a standard part of the NFL Combine evaluation.

This practice test mirrors the Wonderlic format with 40 questions and a 12-minute countdown. Questions increase in difficulty — exactly like the real test. Speed and accuracy both matter. Unanswered questions count as zero, so a guess is always better than leaving a question blank.

📊

Why the NFL uses it

The Wonderlic measures a quarterback's ability to process information quickly under time pressure — a cognitive demand that directly mirrors reading a defence, identifying coverage and making decisions in the pocket within 2–3 seconds.

💼

Corporate use

Over 50,000 companies use the Wonderlic annually — including banks, hospitals, logistics firms and technology companies. It remains one of the most validated pre-employment cognitive assessments in the world.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
QWhat is a good score on the Wonderlic test?
The average Wonderlic score across all test-takers is approximately 20 out of 50. Lawyers and doctors average around 28–29, programmers and engineers around 26–28. In NFL Combine testing, the average quarterback score is approximately 26. Any score above 25 is above average, and scores above 30 place you in the top quartile of test-takers.
QCan I improve my Wonderlic score with practice?
Yes — significantly. Most people score lower on their first attempt primarily because the extreme time pressure is unfamiliar. Practice develops the speed and question-triage habits the test rewards: answering easy questions instantly, skipping hard ones and returning with remaining time. Mental arithmetic shortcuts and vocabulary knowledge are the two most valuable content areas to develop.
QWhat is the strategy for doing well on the Wonderlic?
The Wonderlic rewards systematic triage over methodical completion. The most effective strategy: answer all questions you can answer instantly in the first pass, skipping anything that requires more than 15–20 seconds of thought. Use remaining time for harder questions. Do not get stuck — spending 90 seconds on one difficult question costs you three or four easier ones.
QIs the Wonderlic the same as an IQ test?
The Wonderlic correlates strongly with IQ — typically around 0.8 correlation with the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale — and is often used as a rapid proxy for cognitive ability in employment contexts. A Wonderlic score of 20 corresponds approximately to an IQ of 100. It differs from a standard IQ test in imposing extreme time pressure and being designed specifically for employment rather than clinical assessment.
QHow important is the Wonderlic in employment screening?
The Wonderlic is used as one screening tool among many — never in isolation by reputable employers. It provides a rapid cognitive baseline that correlates with job performance, particularly in roles requiring quick information processing and problem-solving under pressure. Many major employers use it as a first-pass screen. Over 50,000 organisations administer the Wonderlic annually across a wide range of industries and roles.
