The core definition
Creative intelligence is the cognitive capacity to generate novel, useful and surprising ideas — to think in ways that break established patterns, combine distant concepts in new configurations, and produce solutions, insights or works that did not exist before. It is not a single ability but a cluster of five distinct cognitive skills: divergent thinking, originality, cognitive flexibility, elaboration and remote associative thinking. Together these form the complete creative mind — one that does not just think more, but thinks differently.
The scientific study of creative intelligence was pioneered by psychologist Joy Paul Guilford in the 1950s, who distinguished between convergent thinking — arriving at a single correct answer — and divergent thinking — generating multiple possible answers. Guilford argued that IQ tests, which are almost entirely convergent, miss the most generative dimension of human cognition. Decades of research have since confirmed that creative intelligence is a measurable, trainable and deeply consequential cognitive ability — one that predicts entrepreneurial success, scientific breakthrough, artistic achievement and adaptive performance in rapidly changing environments.
Divergent thinking
Generating multiple possible answers, uses or interpretations from a single starting point.
Originality
Producing ideas that are rare, unexpected and genuinely novel rather than obvious or conventional.
Cognitive flexibility
Shifting fluidly between different categories, perspectives and frameworks of thinking.
Elaboration
Developing, refining and enriching an initial idea into something fully realised and detailed.
Remote association
Connecting concepts from distant domains that most people never see as related at all.
You generate multiple solutions to a problem before settling on one
You make connections between ideas from completely different fields
You find conventional or obvious answers unsatisfying
You approach problems from unexpected angles that others miss
You enjoy exploring ideas for their own sake, not just for utility
You are drawn to ambiguity rather than threatened by it
Leonardo da Vinci
The ultimate creative intelligence — he combined divergent thinking, elaboration and remote association across art, anatomy, engineering and science simultaneously, producing ideas centuries ahead of their time.
Frida Kahlo
Her creative intelligence transformed personal pain into mythological imagery — connecting surrealism, indigenous Mexican culture, political identity and autobiography into a visual language entirely her own.
Steve Jobs
His defining creative intelligence was remote association at scale — connecting calligraphy to font design, Zen minimalism to product aesthetics, and liberal arts to technology in ways that no one in Silicon Valley had imagined.
